Opthalmology

We have staff with years of experience treating eye conditions, and fantastic facilities to help support this.

Mark Banks has had an interest in eye cases for over 20 years, achieving a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons further qualification in Ophthalmology (CertVOphthal) in 2005.

Penbode Vets is well equipped with ophthalmic equipment for examination of a patient’s eyes, as well as operating facilities including an operating microscope when performing surgical procedures.

Unfortunately, as many animal owners are aware, eye problems are frequently seen in dogs, cats and other small pets. These can be a result of eye injury, be breed related, or be associated with more generalised disease of the pet. With the use of equipment such as a Slit Lamp Biomicroscope, Direct and Indirect Ophthalmoscopes, and a Tonopen (for measuring intraocular eye pressure) prompt diagnosis can be made and the correct treatment recommended.

If required Ultrasound examination of the eye can be performed.

Mark is kept busy treating conditions such as corneal ulceration, entropion (in-turning of the eyelids), dry eye, inflammation of the eye and glaucoma. Surgical procedures for prolapse of the third eyelid gland (cherry eye), eyelid abnormalities and corneal problems are performed regularly.

Assessment of pets with cataracts can be done, with referral to a specialist centre for surgery if appropriate.

Please contact your branch to book an appointment if you have any ocular concerns..
